After hibernating in Minneapolis for many years working with such bands as Polara, the Wonsers and Steel Shank, Matt emerged with his self-released CD Burnt, White, & Blue,  awarded best Self Released/Indie album at the 1999 Minnesota Music Awards.

Matt has most-recently branched out into the leading edge of internet media with his new on-line publication titled Main Output.

Matt's wonderful sense of wit, intelligence, and affection for the odd, combined with an air of vulnerability, demand applause and your patronage!

Matt Wilson and John Munson played together as The Flops on December 28th and December 29th, 2001 at the 400 Bar in Minneapolis. Two sold-out shows! Miraculously, I made the shows and was able to take the above photo...not only was John pulling instruments right and left out of his pocket, but he had to clone himself to keep up with Matt's musical demands! The shows were fantastic....a lot of Trip Shakespeare material was played including: Drummer Like Me, 2 Wheeler 4 Wheeler, Reception, Spirit, The Lake, Snow Days, If You Miss Me, Susannah and even Toolmaster!

Matt Wilson was the primary writer for the late great Minneapolis band Trip Shakespeare. If you ever feel sad, alone, and confused this album will speak to you in a powerful way. Just to give you an idea, there is actually a musician's credit for "abyss noises."

Trip Shakespeare's music was indescribably important to me when I first heard it at 19 years old and this album is sort of an adult version of that. If you like the Beatles and Beach Boys and strong melodies, vocal harmonies, and mind-bending lyrics generally appeal to you, then you should get this disc. It is his only solo effort to date and I wish there were more.

Truly inspiring!

An amazing songwriter through and through, Matt wilson is one of the most underrated twin-town roosters I know. Each song represents a stack of memories which, after you dry your eyes, you'll love and hate to remember. Quite different than Trip Shakespeare (although equally brilliant), Matt Wilson continues to inspire his listeners even years after his last obscure performance. It breaks my heart a little every day to know that somewhere out there, selling you a book, making you an espresso drink, undressing you with his eyes, Matt Wilson's undying talent greys and wrinkles while the children buy Fallout Boy albums, and the like.

I for one appreciate the enlightenment that Matt Wilson bestowed upon me at an early age through his whimsical enchantments.

Matt, wherever you are, for what it's worth, you're my Alex Chilton.

Trumpet

Here I sit a trumpet in a lonely store

What’s the use I wonder?

What’s the use I wonder?

If your lips never come to my horn

What is it I’m made for?

Anyone can tell

I was made to love you well.

Here I stand shining on the showroom floor

What’s the use I wonder?

What’s the use I wonder?

If your hand never opens up my door

What is it I’m made for?

Anyone can tell

I was made to love you well.

Can I put my whole life in your hands?

Come and take possession of your happy man.

Here I sip your loving cup

What’s the use I wonder, sometimes?

What’s the use I wonder?

If your lips never come drink it up

What is it I came for?

Anyone can tell.

I was made to love you well

I was made to love you well

10,000-Watt Searching Light

When it comes to Mary

I’m an angel standing in her sight

No, she won’t stand for darkness

She’s a 10,000-watt searching light

But if the light stopped shining over the world

The plans that I made will fly over the grave

The ultimate lack of light

The grave with my family name will open up in the night

No, she won’t stand for darkness

She’s a 10,000-watt searching light

I wouldn’t mess with Mary

Her eyes are more black then white

No, you can’t stand to see her

10,00 watt searching light

But if her eyes stop shining over the world

Know that the plans that I made will fly over the grave

The ultimate lack of light

The grave with my family name will open up in the night

No, she won’t stand for darkness

10,000-watt searching light

The ultimate lack of light

The grave with my family name  will open up in the night

All your wishes are useless

She gave me that withering look

Do you wish to be helpless?

Again with that withering look

She won’t stand for darkness

10,000 watt searching light.

Day off tomorrow

What can you say when you’ve enjoyed your night

But to work in the morning wouldn’t seem all right

Day off tomorrow

Day off tomorrow

What’s some medicine that I know taste so good you want to eat it slow?

Day off Tomorrow

Day off Tomorrow

Tomorrow

Tomorrow

I only hope that it’s understood cause the pain and the medicine will do you good

Stay off the sorrow

Day off Tomorrow

What do you do at the party tonight with the fear of the terrible morning light?

Day off tomorrow

Day off tomorrow

Tomorrow

You could dance with me you’ll love it

You can take this job and treat it like you should

The next record that I’m holding here

Will make you glad you remained when we drank the beer

Day off tomorrow

Day off tomorrow

Story’s End

Just listen to what I say

You don’t have to answer right away

I want to live with you at the story’s end

There was an unknown writer

...praised her name

She did move away from me for wasting days

I want to live with her at the story’s end

Can it turn out happily and the sadness end

Now the lanes look  … around her home

Stone are the barriers between me and the place she stays

I said just listen to what I say

You don’t have to answer right away

Now she’s a well-known writer that’s just how it is

I want to live with her at the story’s end

Now the trees are sentinels around her home

Stone are the barriers between me and the place she stays

I said just listen to what I say

You don’t have to answer right away

I want to live with you at the story’s end

Just listen to what I say

Just listen to what I say

I want to live with you

Just listen to what I say

I want to live with you

Fall

Fall keeping me

Red leaves and a sparrow on a tree

She’s leaving me

Like the leaves that fall from a high tree

Oh this night keeps spinning towards the sun

This night I’m blind to the driving white

Today’s longer nights and spirit’s free

Fall keeping me

She’s leaving me

Now she hangs her words from a high tree

Oh this night keeps spinning towards the sun

This night I’m blind to the driving white

Today longer nights and spirits free

Free

Free

And today’s longer nights and spirits free

Fall keeping me

Now she hangs her words from a high tree

Though this night keeps spinning toward the sun

This night I’m blind to the driving white

This night keeps spinning towards the sun

This night I’m blind to the driving white

And today’s longer nights and spirit’s free

Free

Free

And today’s longer nights and spirits free

Maria

I saw a star upon your dress

And I have followed from afar

And I have seen the neighbor road

Out from the lights on your blue car

Maria

Maria

Maria

And though Maria is gone now

We know the rain will go away

Maria

Oh, Maria

Maria

I know Maria is what she seems

And I know

I know when I’ve been redeemed

And I know Maria is what she seems

It’s been at least two thousand years

Two thousand years since I’ve been redeemed

And though Maria is gone now

We know the rain will go away

Maria

Oh Maria

Maria

I know Maria is what she seems

And I know

I know when I’ve been redeemed

I know Maria is what she seems

It’s been at least two thousand years

Two thousand years since I’ve been redeemed

Eighteen Wheeler

Ahead in the Distance

Flipped over in the side lane

An Eighteen Wheeler lies across the highway

Ambulance squad cars

Red lights in the sunshine

??????

O I’m frightened

Lady get out your crystal?

Red blood on the doorways

I don’t want to see

Oh I’m frightened lady get out your pistol?

Blood on the doorway

I don’t want to see

Eighteen-wheeler

Eighteen-wheeler

Eighteen-wheeler

A long line of travelers

On the grassy shoulder of the highway

Drive by the eighteen-wheeler, then back up to seventy

I see in the distance

Red lights in the sunshine

An eighteen-wheeler

Flipped over and sideways

Oh I’m frightened

Lady get out your crystal?

Red blood on the doorways

I don’t want to see

Oh eighteen-wheeler

Eighteen-wheeler

Eighteen-wheeler

Jet Maid

Look at the lady waiting for a plane

She lay across the chairs a little makeup ran down

She was a little older

Her hair was all perfectly done

What could make her fly away from her town

Lady would you tell me if your going to live

Did a poison spider crawl inside your hair

She said if you knew my lover you wouldn’t be making fun

The man was a liar and a beautiful one.

As we were talking I came to watch her lips

And I fell inside her friendly qualities and wit

Late in the evening light

And dream of staying in her hands at night

And the men who know her if my guess is true

Want to stand beside her as I already do

When she came aboard she sat next to me

She made a fuss about if this was an open chair

She said the man was a liar but a graceful and dutiful one

Then she closed her mouth until the liquor came

They made a blinding vow when they were very young

But it was all one-sided she was like a slave

She said she was meant to keep him

But she ceased to be his only love

Meant to keep him until the children all moved and went away

And as we were talking

I came to watch her lips

And I fell inside her friendly qualities and wit

Late, in the evening light

And dream of staying in her hands at night

And the men who know her if my guess is true

Want to stand beside her as I already do

Look at the lady waiting for a plane

Look at the lady waiting for a plane

She was meant to keep him though she ceased to be his only love

Fool of the Wicked Kind

What have you done for the world

I held a flame in my hand

I touched the ball of her eye

Fool of the Wicked Kind

You left her name in the wind

I left a stone on her hand

I gave my name to a child

Born in the cold and blind

Good heavens

I hear

You hear a horn from the road

You hear

I hear the hounds of the past

They bark and howl from behind

Cold to my words and blind

Good heavens

I fear

You fear that it’s cold outside

You left

I left her name in the wind

You did the same for a child

Truth have I been unkind

What have you done for the world

I left a stone on her hand

I gave my name to a child

Born in the cold and blind

Good heavens

I hear

You hear a horn from the road

You hear

I left the hounds of the past

They bark and howl from behind

Cold to my words and blind

I hear

You hear that it’s cold outside

You left

I left her name in the wind

You did the same for a child

Truth have I been unkind

What have you done for the world

Fool of the Wicked Kind

Little Darling

One day playing with my little darling

I asked if she would take me home

So we holed up in her little playground

She turned off her telephone

And I took off my self-defenses

She took off her????

I said little darling don’t you resist me

She jumped like I pulled out a gun

Little darling don’t you resist me

Don’t you resist me

It took a long time for the story to come out

It happened about 3 years before

Little darling ran into a bad man

And dragged her down to the dark train yard

What he did she would not tell me

But she told me what he said and she cried

He said “Hey little darling don’t you resist me”

The candle in her flickered and died

Little darling don’t you resist me, don’t you resist me

You read this stuff in the morning paper

You see it all over the daily news

But it doesn’t mean much til your own little darling

Is the one the news is happening to

Please little darling let me be your lover

And I’ll take you down a beautiful road

Bad memories don’t stay forever

Burned out feelings turn????

Little darling don’t your resist me

Don’t you resist me

Little darling don’t you resist me

Oh don’t you resist me

BLACK ROAD

I made my world a black road to taste her wheels

I made my world a black road, a black road

Until she rides back down I’ll wait to feel the change

I made my world a black road, a black road

And she calls (come down the lane)

And I call (come down the lane)

And I make (come down the lane)

Back Down from twisted times?

And where she rides

Green glow a ton of walls

It took lanes of that town to check around

But when the rains ran down the world we serve

I took the lanes back down from that town

And I call (come down the lane)

And she calls (come down the lane)

And I make (come down the lane)

Back down from twisted times?

Back to my world a black road I’ll wait to feel the change

Under my world a black road

A black road, a black road

Earth By Revolving

Earth by revolving

Reversing in the night

Screwed you to the bed frame in a world of spinning lights

Wound up on a mattress I believe it was a wheel

Now you beg for mercy mercy from the turning that you feel

Earth feather mattress you look like you might take your only rider on a whirly jag tonight

Rise up in the darkness all above the trees

Are the cause for all our turning

Sleeps alone beneath the leaves

There’s my sleeping woman

In a home by turtle lake

Where the houses are the headstones and the bedrooms are the graves

You can tell her world is peaceful and her dreams are awful white

If you look down from your head plane at a whirly wicked height

Earth feather mattress you look like you might take your only rider on a whirly jag tonight

And to rise up in the darkness all above the trees

Are the cause for all our turning sleeps alone beneath the leaves

And you rise up in the darkness in a wall above the trees?

Are the cause for all our turning sleeps alone beneath the leaves

Susannah

Well since it’s quiet and we’ve all had a few

And I know you are my friends

I’ll talk of Susannah as I always do

When I have found an ear to bend

She closed her eyes

And saw nothing of her own

And I said Susannah, don’t cry

Then I closed her eyes and went far from my home

And I sang Oh Susannah

Now when I call Susannah

She goes ahhhh, you’ve come home

But I’m 800 miles from her.

Then when she tells me I want you here

Oooooh, I wish I were

She closed her eyes and saw nothing of her own

And I said Susannah, don’t cry

Then I closed her eyes and soon far did I roam

And I sang Oh Susannah

She closed her eyes and saw nothing of her own

And I said Susannah don’t cry

Then I closed her eyes and went far from my home

And I sang Oh Susannah

Good Friends

Smile all my good men, blind full of smoke

Leave your blessing ashes on my floor

Stay all my girlfriends, howling at a joke

Keep your treasure here within my door

Why have all my good friends

Preserved the torch awhile

I find at the landing

The eyes at the landing

To rise at the stairway

Will lie alone

Stay

Stay all my girlfriends blind full of smoke

Leave your blessing ashes on my floor

Smile all my good men howling at a joke

Keep your treasure here within my door

Why have all my good friends preserve the torch awhile

I find at the landing the eyes at the landing

To rise at the stairway

Will lie alone

Stay

Don’t leave me

Seven years ago

She’s the only reason that I live

She’s the only reason that I live

Why have all my good friends preserve the torch awhile

I find at the landing

The eyes at the landing

To rise at the stairway

Will lie alone

Stay all my good friends

Don’t leave me

Seven years to go

She’s the only reason that I live

She’s the only reason that I live

She’s the only reason

She’s the only reason

She’s the only reason that I live

(ooh ooh ooohoooh)

Under the Influence

Well I’m weaving down the highway with my mind on you

I’m running all the signals cause all the lights are blue

A man is dangerous on the road when he feels the way I feel

You can’t keep your eyes on traffic when you can hardly see the wheel

That’s why I’ve given up on sloe gin, I haven’t downed a beer

I haven’t touched a drop for weeks, except for my own tears

I can’t stand the taste of vodka or any of the above

I’m driving under the influence of love

Wobbling down the boulevard I saw a flashing light

A squad car was behind me pulled me over to the right

Hauled me to the sidewalk and made me walk the line

I said that I was sober he said, “Son we know your kind”

That’s why I’ve given up on sloe gin, I haven’t downed a beer

I haven’t touched a drop for weeks except for my own tears

I can’t stand the taste of vodka or any of the above

I’m driving under the influence of love

Motorists around me may well fear for their lives

But when a man’s beside himself it’s awful hard to drive

Oooooooooooohhhhh

That’s why I’ve given up on sloe gin (huh?)

I haven’t downed a beer (why?)

I haven’t touched a drop for weeks except for my own tears

I can’t stand the taste of vodka or any of the above

I’m driving under the influence of love

River of Endless Light

Fell into my father’s bed

Fell into my father’s bed

Fell into my father’s bed

And my love was close behind

Dream dream, I dream of the river

Came into my sleeping mind

Fell into my father’s wealth

And my love was close behind

Dream dream I dream of a river

A river of endless light

Fair love she woke me with kisses

There baby you were shaken again

That night I looked in on a family

That lived in some ancient time

Well love, she woke me with kisses

There baby you were shaken then

That night I looked in on a family

That night I came into a fortune

That night we fell into a river

And my love was close behind

The following songs were performed live on-stage during the glorious years Trip Shakespeare toured the USA. Some songs were b-sides, but none of them made the feature full-length albums!  I don't really know the official names of any of the songs, or even if they have official names.  And, I know for sure that I did not transcribe some of the lyrics correctly, and for this I want to say to Matt and/or Dan Wilson, and/or John Munson, "I'm sorry, I did the best I could with the raw material provided" Please feel free to correct me!

“...the legendary 'slacks' (replete with sexy/quirky/hilarious choreography); full, glorious harmonies on 'in another life'; a magical wonderland in 'snow days'.

the chemistry (no pun intended) between all these wonderful musicians was amazing all night long. the energy and love was palpable. it flowed from stage to audience and back. it was beautiful. when i heard the first notes of 'two wheeler, four wheeler' in 3 part harmony, i could do nothing but swoon. and when dan, matt and john came back out with 'none of the regular rules were true' into 'lulu' , i just was giddy.

so much great stuff. from 'never you mind' to 'down in flames.'

'if you miss me.' 'queen of tomorrow.'

did i want stuff that wasn't played? sure. bachelorette. your mouth. raking service. falling.

but in reality, i could have hardly asked for anything more than the smiles and laughter and dancing and love and play and joy that i saw on that stage friday night. i know why my friends followed you around. why they couldn't stop talking about trip shakespeare. i never really doubted. but now i know.”

“...Anyway, I thought the show was fantastic, I went in a little bit apprehensive about the Flops and Trips stuff. Having bought two Trip albums I have not really got into the music. But it really, really rocked, I thought Slacks was a riot! The Flops stuff was also very good, I was completely surprised at how good Matt’s voice is, and frankly, I think he was the best showman on the stage. I would like to have heard more from Dan’s solo stuff but what I heard was good, I am defiantly looking forward to buying the album when it comes out.

I kind of got the feeling at the show that we were witnessing a kind of rebirth of the band.”

“...the flops are matt and john who have been around as long if not longer than semisonic and some songs they do are even older than semisonic itself...and you just can't lump matt into semisonic just like you can't just lump dan in with the flops....if you've never seen matt perform I suppose it's easy to say just throw matt into semisonic unless you've actually seen him perform and then you would realize that that is impossible..”

“...Regardless though, I agree with everybody that has said this show was truly a show to never be forgotten, special in every way. I think one of the biggest things that made it special to me was that it wasn't only the crowd that seemed to have an almost tangible energy and excitement, but everybody who played those nights, too. Dan, Matt, John, Jake, Andy, Ken, everybody around seemed to just have this glow.

The thing that makes shows most memorable and enjoyable to me is when the performers are *really* enjoying themselves, completely in to the moment and the music, and treating that performance as if it was the only one that ever mattered. And these two shows were totally that.

The grins on everybody's faces throughout various moments of the show were the types of smiles that people have when they don't think or care that anybody else is watching. The most genuine kind of all.”

Matt’s insight:   "We hadn't been around very long, and we were so excited to play for these guys.

We envisioned them standing there, taking in every note," recalls Wilson. "We played this incredible set, even faster than we usually played. We were sweating when we were done; it was like the show of our lives. And then we watched them walk in through the back door next to the stage as we were tearing down our stuff.      It was crushing."

(1n 1984, Matt Wilson would turn 21 and John Munson would turn 22.....I am going to deduce that in 1984 Elaine was finishing her Harvard Education.....she moved to Minneapolis after graduating sometime in 1985....Applehead Man was released in 1986.)

After being put through the major-label ringer with the quirky pop/rock outfit Trip Shakespeare and his subsequent moonlighting in various Twin Cities bands as a drummer, Matt Wilson marked his return to the music world as a singer/songwriter with Burnt, White and Blue. The clever and occasionally ridiculous lyrics and arrangements that were the hallmarks of Trip Shakespeare songs were retired with the band, and as this album makes clear, Wilson has refined a more sophisticated but no less exciting sound. From the gorgeous guitar and revitalizing chorus of the opening track "Sun Is Coming," to the wistful acoustic answering machine ballad that closes the album ("Hello Caller"), Burnt, White and Blue is wonderfully written and performed –- an engendering and gratifying listen from start to finish.
